Over winter break we decided that we were going to get married at our house in the yard. We had been looking for estates for awhile and it was just looking to cost too much, so finally I threw the idea to Cass about having it in the backyard. We both decided that it was totally possible, and if we were going to spend a large amount of money to rent a place, why not spend it to make our own place better. At least the improvements to our house would last more than one day! So we got to cleaning and deciding what steps to take in the yard. As we began cleaning we started to accumulate junk that just needed to go. Our first plan was to put it on the street with a sign that said free and hoped someone would take it. I watched the wheels turning in Cass’s brain as he piled the junk on the side of the road and knew that a great idea was brewing. He proposed that we make the junk into some form of something, which he had been wanting to do for awhile. I agreed and so we got to work! In about two hours we had the full form in place.
It’s all held up by an old go cart frame. A lawnmower is in place for each arm. An exhaust as the inner body, as well as another exhaust being held by the lawnmower to look like a bazooka. He has wings as well as wheels and a hood! He is fantastic and makes me smile even on bad days.
We’ve had mixed emotions about him being at the bottom of the driveway, yet nobody has thankfully tried to ruin him! His fanbase is growing and it just makes me happy. As I took the trash out a few days ago I got to talk with one of the fans. He told me that he was bringing his son by because he hadn’t seen it. He asked me a few questions about who built it and if we were going to school for art. He commented that it was real art. In the past month I’ve seen all different people stop. We actually had a caltrans tractor and dumptruck out there one day. I have no idea what they think, but I wish that I knew!
It’s sad to say it, but we’ve also had the people who have commented that what we are doing is immature. To them, I can only hope that you open your eyes and realize that art is everywhere. It’s in the clouds, in your clothes, in everything. Learn to accept it and be more open, I promise, you’ll probably be happier. <3
